Fans of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's cosmic work at Marvel and DC would do well to check out their latest creator-owned work from BOOM! Studios, The Hypernaturals. Combining all the things you enjoyed about their work on the Gaurdians of the Galaxy or Legion Lost, DnA are continuing to display their knack for galaxy-expanding superheroics.

I had a chat with Abnett about The Hypernaturals and what fans of the duo's past exploits can expect.

IGN Comics: First, can you give us the quick pitch on what Hypernaturals is all about?

Dan Abnett: The Hypernaturals is full-on cosmic superhero adventure, on a massive scale, the sort of thing we’ve made our names with on Legion Of Super Heroes at DC and Guardians of the Galaxy at Marvel. It’s about a human future, where a vast star-spanning post-singularity civilization called the Quantinuum, catered to by a vast AI of the same name, is policed and protected by the rare, one-in-a-billion super-powered individuals who occur in the population. They are Hypernaturals, and they form a team that protects the universe.

IGN: You’ve got a long history with stories on the cosmic scale – what appeals to you about the genre?

Abnett: I think it very much suits our British sensibilities, because growing up our comics had a lot more sci-fi and less superhero in them. I write regularly for 2000AD, which I read as kid, and I think that’s the perfect demonstration of the higher sci-fi content in British comics. For us, they off-set the potential pitfalls of “men in tights” adventures. In a cosmic setting, huge characters are still set against a huge backdrop, and their look and powers are an extension of science and technology and function.

IGN: What do you think fans of your cosmic work at Marvel or DC will identify with in Hypernaturals?

Abnett: The same kind of invention, of world-building, or character-driven stories, the same kind of big storylines, layered with twists and surprises and reveals, the same kind of simmering backstories... but dialed up!

IGN: How does doing cosmic in a creator-owned capacity different from doing it with company-owned characters? Are you doing anything in Hypernaturals that perhaps you couldn’t do at Marvel?

Abnett: Yes, because we’re building this universe from scratch. The Quantinuum universe is ours, and we had to build it first so we could set stories in it. That means we can do bigger and wilder things. We are not constrained by pre-existing Marvel Universes or DCUs. These are literally stories we couldn’t tell anywhere else.

IGN: What’s the scope of the Hypernaturals universe – how deep do your notes go?

Abnett: Very deep. We have worked out so much stuff, and so much detail about the universe and the history -- and a lot of the stuff we can’t show in the main strip is showing up in the back-up features every issue. These are “in universe” pages to help you get a feel for the Quantinuum... ads, articles, features, all faked up to look like they’re real artifacts from the series setting.

IGN: How did Hypernaturals wind up at BOOM!?

Abnett: We were invited! We were talking to BOOM! and wanted to work with them, and they wanted us to do something for them. We had this idea which we’d been thinking about... and it was the right fit!
